His broadcast career began in 1939 on the radio where he hosted quiz programs and was the announcer for several stations in Michigan and Chicago. After a WWII stint in the navy, he returned to Chicago, working for the CBS radio network as an announcer and occasional actor. He made the switch to television in the 1950s, acting in small roles, working as a reporter and hosting interview programs.

Wallace is the recipient of 21 Emmys Awards, and 3 Peabody Awards. In 2003 he was given a Lifetime Achievement Emmy.

He was the father of broadcast journalist Chris Wallace.
