Fuel Price Protest: Police Deny Thika Road is Blocked, Say Photos are Fake

The National Police Service (NPS) has dismissed viral images showing a huge traffic snarl-up along Thika Superhighway as a result of alleged blockage.

The spokesperson Bruno Shioso clarified the social media images have been cleverly and maliciously photoshopped and that no such incidences had been witnessed anywhere in the country.

"The National Police Service wishes to clarify that there is no road blockage on Thika superhighway or anywhere else in the country. We urge Kenyans to ignore the photoshopped pictures being used to peddle this misinformation and continue with their travel plans," Shioso stated on Thursday, September 16.

For the better part of the day, Kenyans on social media, particularly Twitter, called all motorists to stop their vehicles wherever they will be 30 minutes at noon on September 16, as a way of expressing anger and disgust over the increased fuel price.

Fuel price review

In its latest monthly review on September 14, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Petroleum Authority (EPRA) announced an upward revision of the prices of petroleum products.

Super petrol increased by KSh 7.56, retailing at KSh 134.72; diesel by KSh 7.94, retailing at KSh 115.60; and kerosene by KSh 12.97, retailing at KSh 110.82 per litre in Nairobi.

In Mombasa, petrol will now retail at Ksh132.46, diesel at Ksh113.36 while kerosene will sell at KSh 108.57.

Following the announcement, Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) secretary-general Francis Atwoli told the government to stop irritating workers with outrageous and insensitive fuel prices every time.

In a statement on Thursday, September 17, the secretary-general asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to issue a statement on the unfair and perpetual increase in fuel prices.

“We would like Uhuru to comment and make a statement on this unfair perpetual increase in fuel prices. Unless their policies place Kenyan workers at the centre then they should prepare for unrest from all quarters,” he said.
