Laikipia: Police Arrest Tiaty MP William Kamket over Clashes

Police officers have arrested Tiaty Member of Parliament William Kamket over the ongoing war between Laikipia and Baringo counties that has left several people dead and hundreds of families displaced.

  • William Kamket was arrested at his home in Kositei in Baringo county by DCI detectives
  • His arrest was confirmed by Baringo county Police Commander Robinson Ndiwa who said the operation was still going on
  • Former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkez has also been arrested in connection with the clashes

Police officers have arrested Tiaty Member of Parliament William Kamket over the ongoing war between Laikipia and Baringo counties that has left several people dead and hundreds of families displaced.

Kamket arrested by DCI

Kamket was arrested on Wednesday, September 8, at his home in Kositei it Baringo county by sleuths attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

His arrest was confirmed by Baringo county police commander Robinson Ndiwa.

"Those herders are the people who have been employed to look after the animals for prominent people, the MP being included," Ndiwa said.

Ndiwa stated that the operation was still going on adding that police were facing a lot of resistance from the armed herders who have been incited to violence.

“So we arrested the MP to come and answer the charges of incitement and clashes in regard to what has been going on in Laikipia and Baringo," he added.

The MP was driven to Nakuru for grilling pending arraignment.

Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkez

Also in police custody over the banditry attacks at the Laikipia Nature Conservancy and the surrounding areas, is former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkez.

Lempurkel was also arrested Wednesday morning at his home in Rongai, Kajiado county, by DCI detectives.

He was grilled at the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road and is set to be arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts.

Sophisticated M16 guns

According to Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya, the two leaders are believed to be among those fueling the attacks in Laikipia county.

In a separate story, TUKO.co.ke reported that Natembeya said that the bandits own guns that outmarch those used by Kenyan police officers.

He said that some of the weapons, like the M16 guns, are owned by foreign troops who conduct paramilitary training in the region.
