'KDF' warns Raila against dragging it into August election

National Super Alliance (NASA) flag bearer has been warned against linking the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) with the General Election to be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2017.

Security leaders in the country said the KDF is apolitical and warned politicians against dragging the disciplined forces into politics.

Speaking on Friday, June 23, the leaders who included Chief of Defence Forces Samson Mwathethe, Defence CS Raychelle Omamo and her Interior counterpart said the utterances are meant to intimidate the KDF and other security personnel.

"KDF will, as always, remain apolitical during the electoral process. They will discharge their mandate without fear, favour or ill will. KDF will not run in the face of intimidation from any quarter," a joint statement by the three read by Omamo said.

The response comes after Raila claimed that the Jubilee administration was planning to use KDF to rig the election.

In a statement, Raila said a number of KDF soldiers and Administration Police were being trained at the Embakasii Barracks to be returning officers in NASA strongholds.

He also said that a number of KDF soldiers had been deployed to some NASA strongholds such as Kakamega county in preparation for the election.

Raila begged the disciplined forces to remain true to their course and avoid interfering in political affairs.
